Ice Works
ISCA's Executive Director, Colin Kerrigan, has been elected to the post of Professor at Heilongjiang International University (HIU) in Harbin, China. Within his role at the university, Mr Kerrigan will visit at least three times a year to establish a Creative Project Space, which will exist in parallel to the undergraduate art and design courses. He will also develop his own personal studio within the Space.
Mr Kerrigan's first project at HIU was to lead a team of academics and undergraduate students in the design and execution of a large-scale ice sculpture submitted to the National Ice Sculpture competition. On receiving an Excellence Award in the competition, he said, "I was delighted that the work was so well-received. The whole process was fascinating and unlike any other sculptural work I have undertaken before."
Ice was cut directly from the city's river and shaped with a variety of power tools including chain saws. Working in sub-zero temperatures of -25 to -30°C was one of the main challenges.
